VVV 3 Match Reports

The Fight

23rd July. The day we were waiting for since our first game against Kampong. I arrived at the ground well before the scheduled time to check the ground, prepare it. ( open club house, do the boundary lines) I thought I would be doing it alone but eventually Asif arrived at the scene and caught me red handed. We both finished the work. I was told later the opponent captain was also there already watching us doing the preparation from distance. This game we had official umpires Steve Tovey and Hasrat Bagkari who did really fair umpiring and made sure the game is played in good spirit. This was a big game of the season. Both teams had equal points and this was going to be a fight for the championship. And yes the fight it was.

VVV won the toss and elected to bat first. The batting lineup was quite strong and our aim was to bat out 40 overs and setup a good target to defend for our bowlers. The start of VVV was not that great and we lost two wickets quickly for opener Asif Khan and no.3 Saqib Chaudry. This was a big blow. Kokab Nadeem and Ali Rashid played really mature and started building up a good much needed partnership. The score reached 40 in 10 overs for 2 wicket when the rain stopped the play. We had an early lunch and after rain stopped and ground dried a bit the game was resumed. We now had 32 overs in total to play for each team. Kokab played a marvelous innings (4x6 and 2x4) and scored 62 runs. Ali played an excellent supporting role from other end and together they added 102 runs to the team total. With 9 overs left in play we lost some quick wickets and no one could contribute big score to the total until at No.10 Omar Raja played a cameo of 17 runs of 5 balls. (2x6 and 1x4). VVV finished at 162 for 9 in 32 overs.

We started bowling within 15 mins of the inning pause. Omar and Zee attacked with bowling. Omar always had the feeling that we were going to win this match on fielding. That proved to be true. Opening of Kampong had a fire cracker start with 2x4 and quick singles in 1st 2 overs but due to our sharp fielding one of their openers was runout. Omar bowled the other opener in his following over. After 8 good overs a change was made to bring Kokab and Khurram Tahir . Kokab managed to take a wicket in his second over by a brilliant catch by Saqib Chaudry over extra cover. The ball was hit very high and Saqib ran all the way from Mid off to over extra cover and held on to the catch. 7 more to go before we could claim the victory. Pacers got punished a bit so quickly spinners Ali and Saqib Iqbal were brought into attack to change the momentum of the game. Both did what was asked where Ali stood out with 4 wickets in his 7 over spell for 22 runs. Saqib supported him good with 7 overs 1 wicket and 25 runs. With 1 wicket left Omar was brought into attack again to finish kampong innings with style and he up rooted the off stump of the last man on first ball of his over. VVV3 won by 55 runs.

The season is almost near end and we have 3 more games to go. Team needs maximum support it can get and from members prospective everyone is supporting this team which is a very good sign for the club. So far this has been a good year for VVV overall so we hope we can add as many good things as we can to make it even better by supporting all our teams.

Peace.

You Must Be A Warrior

IMG-20170625-WA0030

25th June we had a match against Bloemendaal. Cloudy and wet. Some would say this would be the perfect condition to bowl first. Though VVV3 team was sent to bat first. From then onwards it was a joy ride of game for both teams. A bowlers day.

Batting first VVV should have had no concerns. With a strong batting line up target was set to surpass 200. In reality the pitch conditions were so difficult to bat that our best batsmen in top order were sitting with us in a matter of few balls. 11 for 2 in 3.4 overs. Things were not looking that great for VVV. We knew we had a lot of batting power so early wickets were not going to hurt us that much. "Only if we keept the wickets in hand till last overs". After losing Asif and Ali for 0 a piece. Saqib Chaudry and Abid Malik started building up a small innings. Some singles were refused some doubles were missed. I guess we just wanted to get away safe from the attack bowlers spell in hopes to score some runs of 1st or 2nd change. Bloemendaal bowling no doubt is best in the league and they did show us that day. Except Saqib Chaudry no one could stay that long to build up a decent innings. Abid, Kokab , Tajieb , Khurram, Hamza, Bilal all fell prey to good bowling and as well as some silly shots. Only Saqib Chaudry kept his head cool and stayed in there as long as he could to complete half century. Omar Raja , out of no where started agressive and hit a huge six over extra cover with an intention to score quick runs to change the momentum of the game but that did not do the trick. VVV were all out in 34 overs for 125 runs. Tajieb was applauded for his batting by Blomendaal players. A good thing to see from opponents when your are fighting for championship.

Batting:
Saqib Chaudry 50
Tajieb Tabassum 20
Abid Malik 18

125 runs was never going to be an easy target to defend. We were not to give up that easy. "If they can get us out on a low total so can we". With this intention we went to field to win the match. Omar and Zee attacked with bowling and they were on target from the start of their spell. First 4 overs there were 2 runs on the board and no wickets down until Omar struck with caught behind by an amazing catch by Kokab. 1 down 9 to go. Next over Zee clean bowled the other opener. This was the the start we intended. Omar also clean bowled their strong batsman and within no time Bloemendaal were 11 for 3. Video Below.

It was the same start Bloemendaal had with their bowling. Ours was a bit better. With 5 overs each end , it was time for a change to keep getting wickets. Kokab was requested to take off his pads and give it a go at bowling. That proved to be the best decision of the game. Kokab took the wicket on the very first ball of his first over. What more you could have asked for.  I must add a little background for Kokab. He has never been considered as a bowler. His action is also very unorthodox. He plays mostly as Keeper and a top order batsman. Though many have said he should be given a chance with bowling as well. I do not think any day would have been better to prove you are a good bowler than 25th June. "Defending a low total and needing only wickets to win". Now back to the match. Kokab was on fire and one after the other he started chewing up Bloemendaal batsmen. They had no where to hide. One after the other they started falling like a house of cards. Fielders also supported Kokab and Tajieb took a marvelous catch at short cover diving towards his right. Video Below

Kokab ended up taking a 5 wickets haul , including the last wicket caught at mid on by Omar Raja. Bloemendaal were all out for 66 runs in 24th over.

Bowling:
Kokab Nadeem  6.2o 0m 27r 5w
Omar Raja        7o    0m 13r 3w
Zee Choudhry   7o    2m 13r 2w

A good game and a good defend by bowlers. This team is a true warrior. Never Give Up!
And most of all Kokab is a true all rounder.  Keeper , Bowler and Batsman. Well Done Kokab Nadeem!!

Catch that!

I saw the glimpse of the Hilversum scoring 250+ runs against ACC while we were playing against HMS. I knew we were in for a run feast this last Sunday. When we reached the Hilversum ground we were amazed to see how small the ground was. To top that up , trees branches from square boundaries were saying "hello" 10 meters inside the field of play.  Hit that and its a 6.

Square boundaries also had water creeks and and thick bushes. It looked like we were going to play in an Island surrounded by water. 300+ runs? yes very possible. Going to use 10 balls in a match ? Of course. Though the home team said , if you can not find your own ball that's hit for a boundary chances are you are going to find another one inside the thick bushes....
So the question was who is going to bat first?

With half of the team was not even available at the ground ready to play , captain went for toss in hopes to win it but sadly like last week this didn't happen. Hilversum instantly made the decision to bat first. We started almost on time with the attack bowling by Zee and Bilal. No wickets fell in first 8 overs but Hilversum also had the trouble to score runs of good bowling by the two. Shahzaib as first change was handed over the ball in hopes to break the partnership that was on the brink of making team frustrated. Shazaib delivered what was asked for and clean bowled the opener in his 2nd over. He bowled 4 maidens in his 5 overs first spell with 1 wicket. Since pacers were not getting rewarded well Ali replaced Bilal and that's where our team fielding showed a flaw. 4 cathes were dropped ( 3 in 1 over). This was frustrating for everyone and specially for the bowler. We could have bowled them out for under 120 but in order to do that you need the catch the damn ball at every opportunity. Hilversum started scoring odd boundaries when eventually a ball was caught at short cover by Tajieb bowled by Ali. A much needed break through was delivered. Last 5 overs Shazaib and Zee did good bowling and reduced the score to 178 for 6.  in 40 overs.

Bowling stats:
Zee          6o 1m 21r 2w
Shahzaib  8o 4m 19r 2w
Ali           8o 0m 37r 2w

After lunch in the forest somewhere ( A wooden shed was the marker to find the place to eat ) Shahzaib and Ali opened the batting for VVV. It looked like they both were in a hurry to finish the game in 20 overs. Too much IPL's i guess? In any case that was a fire cracker start. Within 8 overs we were well over 50 when Ali got caught at Extra cover? or was it cover? or was it extra extra cover? Hilversum captain was smart closing in the gap for Ali shots. Tajieb went in and started off with a few dots and then out of no where hit a huge 6 over long off. Soon after at 91 we lost Shahzaib to very odd dismissal. He nicked a ball which looked like it bounced just after touching the bat to the keeper. Umpire did not give out but Shahzaib showed great sportsmanship and walked away just shy of 1 run from his half century. Abid was new batsman on the crease with Tajieb and they kept the score rate high as Ali and Shahzaib and built up a partnership of 40 runs in no time. Tajieb finally had a good knock with 1x6 and 4x4 while  scoring 31 runs. Tajieb fallen prey to wide off side off stump ball and trying to play it towards backward point when 20 runs were needed for victory. Within 23 overs Abid and Djawid Akbari finished the game with ease with Abid again stayed NOT OUT for 2nd time at 36 ( 1x6 and 5x4).

Batting stats:
Shahzaib  49

Abid       36*

Tajieb    31

A good win and 2 points in the bag and a new thing to improve in the training. Our fielding.

The Cornered Tiger

Double thriller this weekend drained all my energy to write a report. Sleepless 2 nights in a row. Never ever played such games where victory was impossile and still the teams VVV1 and VVV3 managed to pull it off. Having played both games I will not be able to forget this long cricket weekend ever. Let me recap what I can for ACC3 vs VVV3 on Sunday 4th June.

ACC3 sadly did not win any game they played so far this season. Knowing they lost their first 3 games, I thought they will come back strong at us no matter what, to win the 4th game and boy I was so right. ACC won the toss and elected to bat first. They were looking to put up a strong total but no one knew what wonders this pitch can do. I wont trust this pitch anymore for sure. Last match against QV on same pitch we put up a total of 259 runs. It was a batting paradise but this time pitch quality took a U turn. With Spinner performance on the same pitch last match, Ali Rashid ( off spinner) was brought to attack with Zee. The combination worked well and in no time Ali got the break through we were looking for caught in safe hands of Zee at mid wicket. Zee also got another one bite the dust in no time caught at gully by Asif Khan. This was the good start we were looking for. ACC batsman built up a small partnership so Zee was replaced with Mohammad Yasin and Ali with Bilal Khadim. Bilal bowled really well but did not get any wicket until Shafaqat came to bowl. 1st over he struck with knocking the middle stump out of the ground. Bilal on other end got another vital break through and this started a chain reaction of wickets falling one after the other. Ali was brought into attack again and got a wicket caught at mid wicket by yet again superb catch by Zee diving to his right , catching the ball with his right hand. ACC in the end all out for 135.

Bowling stats:
Zee 7o 3m 2w 16r
Bilal 8o 2m 2w 21r
Ali 8o 1m 2w 22r

After lunch we started our innings with hopes to finish the match soon and watch VVV2 team match on the other side of the club house. 2 LBWs were given by our fair umpires and our top order Tajieb , Asif and Ali ( bowled) were back sitting with us in no time after scoring just a few runs. 27 for 3.
This was a very big blow. Abid Malik in this situation stayed calm and held on to his wicket and kept scoring runs where from other end everyone was falling pray to ACC. No one was able to play smart and left Abid standing alone without any support. At 100 runs we were 9 down and only 1 wicket left. The Batsman No.11. Mr Zee. who has history of just closing his eyes and try to hit the ball out of the park (You get the picture what type of batsman he is. ) joined Abid in hopes to some how manage to win the game.

So the battle started. ACC wants Zee wicket. Zee was determined to block every ball he faces. Abid was determined to keep scoring runs with his power hitting and rotating the strike at last ball so Zee does not have to face as much as possible. 40 runs were to score. The score rate was never a problem. Wickets were the problem. There were none left. Abid played really well and punished ACC bowlers. With smart tactic of Zee blocking and Abid scoring runs VVV started reaching the target. Eventually Zee also scored some runs while trying to block or leave the ball. We reached the total of 134. Abid was shy of 5 runs for his 50. With a plan to tie first Abid scored a single on the last ball of the over. A huge roar sounded by everyone supporting from pavilion. Next over Abid smacked the ball over mid on for glorious boundary for a 50 and to finished the match. VVV won by 1 wicket. I could not believe it we pulled it off. This was such a narrow escape. 40 runs partnership at last wicket is a story on its own.

A lot learned from this match. An example is set on how to avoid losing wickets. What needs to be done when you see your fellow mates are going down 1 by one. BLOCK THE DAMN BALL. Play smart. Stop the wicket fall and recover. Lets hope VVV comes back strong after this match.

Batting Stats:
Abid Malik 50*

Level 0 Cricket

ali-bobby2

27th May Dog day, worst level of cricket I have ever witnessed in my Netherlands carrier. Sportsmanship 0 , Tolerance level 0, Umpiring level 0. Knowledge about cricket 0. Performance 0 . How many 0's I can add to this game which I played this last Saturday against QV. In fact the opponents gave so much trouble in even scoring by bowling 52 wides. Wow . What a shame and then complain about respecting the umpire decision. I thought it would be a a competitive game and we should give our best but seriously I am doubting that thrill of a thought I had before the game. Was it really needed when playing against such an opponent? It was such a poor level.

The game it self for VVV3 players was a spot on performance with 7 people in the team fasting in the month of Ramadan. Considering it was a hot day, 33+ degrees it was an achievement on its own to play in that weather. And to top that up we dominated the game from very beginning.

VVV won the toss and elected to bat first. We had a target of 200 total as par on that field. With strong batting line up Kokab Nadeem and Bobby Murtaza opened and we lost an early wicket of Kokab trying to hit a ball for 6. The ball kept low and Kokab was sitting with us in no time talking about how well he is going to be doing next match ( Which BTW he did ). Tajieb Tabassum joined Bobby and they did manage to score some runs together when Tajieb got caught at cover after scoring a few boundaries. This lad will make VVV proud some day but this was not that day. At 26 for 2 Saqib Chaudry joined Bobby and score a quick 26 in no time with some really good fireworks shots. In the mean time QV bowlers were busy giving us extra runs every over which was helping us great deal in keeping the score run rate at 10 an over and we reached 100 in no time.

After Saqib got caught. Ali Rashid started building up an innings with Bobby Murtaza ( who was also the one who was fasting that day) . Bobby played master class innings and kept rotating the strike after hitting a boundary. QV had no reply for Bobby. It seems Bobby had a mission to score a hattrick of 50's back to back. Which infact he did. Bobby and Ali built up a partnership of 91 runs. In the mean time Qui Vive bowlers were committed to add extra runs to our total and kept on bowing wide balls in every over. Some supporters were saying what level of cricket is this? They can not bowl an over without giving an extra wide run? Ali scored good 38 runs when he tried to hit a loopy spinner out of his crease and got stumped. Bobby finished with a massive total of 70 runs. The middle order batsman R.Alves and Bilal Khadim added 40 plus runs together to the team total and VVV finished their innings with a grand total of 259 for QV to chase in 40 overs.

Batting stats:

Bobby A Murtaza 70

Ali Rashid 38

Saqib Chaudry 26

After lunch Zee Choudhry and Shafaqat Ali attacked for VVV and bowled good line and length. With a catch dropped no wicket fell in first 8 overs so Zee was replaced by Bilal which resulted in a wicket. 9th over total was 33 with 3 forced extras by QV umpiring. A no ball was called after the batsman hit the ball in air and it was almost going to be caught. The square leg umpire said batsman played with cross bat over his waist where infact he played with straight bat and hit the ball in air towards mid off where Kokab was ready to take the catch. We knew this is coming after QV bowling performance. After we were told to respect umpires decision we continued on with the game. Moments later a run out was not given. Respecting "UMPIRE" decision we moved on and finally able to get another run out appealed approved. 55 for 2 was a good start in 12 overs for us. QV was struggling to score runs already when Ali Rashid was asked to spin and what a good change it was. QV could not read Ali off spin and started to hit the ball in air. Zee took 3 catches on Ali bowling and Ali excellent spell finished with 8 overs 3 wickets and 38 runs. Since QV had trouble to play spin, Saqib Chaudry and Khurram Tahir ( Spin fast mixture) were brought in to attack and each took a wicket. After 2 more runouts and one wicket left, Kokab was asked to bowl to finish of QV miserable innings which he did on his first ball of 2nd over.  QV all out for 163. ( with some bad scoring and unaccounted for extras they added to the total)

Good win for VVV but a bad level of cricket. In a nutshell VVV won the game with almost 100 runs margin and what a team performance this was. Excellent bowling and Excellent batting. We do hope QV starts considering educating their team on how to umpire and do good scoring on books. And most of all learn to bowl.

The Taste of Blood.

2017 has been a good season for cricket so far. Every week we are greeted with sunny and pleasantly warm days. Last week's convincing win over our opponents, the team moral was high. Most showed up at training and the result of those extra efforts we saw in the match against HMS.

Having lost the toss we were asked to bowl first. HMS captain was sounding quite convincing that they wanted to bat first. Whom am I to judge. So we went to the field with a bit of warm up ready to bowl. Our target was set to restrict them to 150 total.

Zee and Shafaqat Ali started the attack and they were spot on dominating HMS batsmen. An out-swinger found the edge flying towards gully but the catch was not taken. Boy those early wickets missed chances. That did not seem to bother Zee that much and very next over he bowled an in-swinging yorker and uprooted the middle stump. And there you go, HMS which were struggling to score runs, started their journey towards early finish. With hardly any runs on the board 11/1 in 8 overs Shafaqat clean bowled another batsman with consistent wicket to wicket bowling and the following over another one with same delivery. In no time they were 30 for 3 in 11 overs. Bilal Khadim replaced Zee (4-0-8-1) and his left arm medium fast pace was too good for HMS to handle. He consistently bowled one line and length and finally got his reward caught at mid off in safe hands of Ali Rashid.

HMS in the mean time could not even take singles because of sharp fielding by everyone in the team. Khurram Tahir replaced Shafaqat (6-0-15-2) after his 6 overs and bowled exceptionally well while giving 1 run in his first 3 overs ( 2 maiden). HMS had no reply to Khurram. They could not read Khurram mystery bowling ( Till date I do not know if he is an offspiner, a medium pacer or a fast bowler). Hats off to the keeper who stands behind stumps and collect Khurram bullets. Roy Thomas did a fabulous job as a keeper. You suddenly feel more confident knowing your keeper is not going to miss anything. With consistent good pressure bowling , HMS struggled to score any runs and their failed attempt resulted in 2 runouts. We revised our target to get them bowled out under 80 and so we did.

Bilal (8-2-16-1) finished his good spell and replaced by Ali Rashid as trade for offspin and on the other end Hameed Mirza was brought into attack. Spin from both end proved to be too good and both spinners took 2 wickets each. For Ali one caught at mid wicket and one bowled. He bowled really well. For Hameed one caught at cover and one very odd bowled. It was a flighted delivery and batsman thought its too high so he ducked but the ball dipped and hits the bottom of the stumps. What an odd way to get bowled. IMO that ball was too deceiving for batsman to realize its just going to be a full toss. Smart bowling by Hameed helped us reach our revised target. Ali (5-0-15-2) Hameed (6-2-8-2)

HMS were bowled out for 73 in 32.4 overs. This was a great effort by the team to dominate in the field. We had a plan and we as a team executed it well.
After lunch Ali and Tajieb Tabassum were sent to bat to represent VVV opening batsman pair. From the very beginning they looked too strong for the opponent. Great to see youngsters like Tajieb play that well. This guy can drive the ball like a pro.

Within 4 overs we were already at 24 when Tajieb tried to smack a wide out side off delivery and got caught at short cover. I am not sure how that fielder was able to catch that ball but a sad ending for Tajieb that he had to walk his way back to pavilion. Hamza Ahmad joined Ali in the run chase as No.3. Ali played a good innings to support the team and made sure the runrate stayed over 5 for a comfortable win. Hamza struggled a bit to score runs and in order to rotate the strike eventually played across the line on a straight ball and lost his wicket as LBW. We were 55 for 2 when Khurram joined Ali. With a few runs left Ali played a beautiful cover drive and scored a boundary for a comfortable win for VVV.

Ali Rashid 37*

Tajieb Tabassum 12

This was an excellent convincing win over opponents considering we had a shallow batting lineup. But I guess when you click as a team , nothing is unbeatable.
